An amazing opportunity to experience while a social work major at Benedict College is to join the Phi Alpha Honor Society. Phi Alpha is a honor organization dedicated to providing a closer bond among social work students and promoting humanitarian goals and ideals. The “Kappa Psi” chapter of Phi Alpha is located on our campus, and I interviewed graduating senior, Washington D.C. native and Phi Alpha president, Purshae Nettles. We discussed her presidency and experiences leading Phi Alpha. “I ran for president because we were in need for Social Work leaders and I am used to taking on a leadership role in my family, so I ran.” She continued by expressing, “I also wanted to challenge my fears (public speaking) and felt this was a great opportunity to do so.”

Phi Alpha invites those who have accomplished excellence in scholarship and achievement in social work. When asked about why students should join Phi Alpha, Nettles replied, “Phi Alpha promotes excellence among students in social work and is a place where students can bring different ideas and goals to the social work department.” Also,”Phi Alpha promotes a healthy bond among the members and I really enjoy it. We get involved in the community by donating to homeless shelters and Toy Drives, but the most important part is that we are able help those in need.” Being a Social Work major at Benedict College and being apart of Phi Alpha has helped Nettles to apply to graduate school.
