Dr. Michael L. Lomax, president and executive officer of the United Negro College Fund (UNCF), was the featured speaker at Benedict College’s 138th Commencement Convocation at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 8, 2007, in the Benjamin Mays Human Resources Center Arena. Dr. Lomax also will receive an honorary doctorate of human letters degree during the commencement ceremonies.

Attorney Lezli Baskerville, president and chief executive officer of the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education (NAFEO), was the 2005 Winter Commencement keynote speaker. She is one of the nation’s leading legal authorities on affirmative action and diversity in higher education. Benedict College awarded Attorney Baskerville an Honorary Doctors of Law Degree. 107 graduates received degrees.

The Honorable Robert C. “Bobby” Scott, Congressman for the 3rd District of Virginia delivered the keynote address at Benedict College’s 136th Commencement Ceremony which was held in the HRC Arena on campus. Dr. Bernard Anderson was the 2002 Commencement Speaker. He is a renowned Economist and former Assistant U.S. Secretary of Labor for the Employment Standards Administration which includes the Wage and Hour Division, the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs, the Office of Workers’ Compensation Programs, and the Office of Labor Management Standards and Assistant Secretary for the U.S. Department of Labor.
The Class of 2002 presented the College with a Mace for its senior class gift. It was designed and fashioned by sculptor and Assistant Professor of Art, Michael Hale. It is 52 inches in length, constructed of bronze, velvet and oak.
The ceremonial academic mace is an historical amalgam of the regal scepter of rulers with the weapon-like instrument known as a mace. Academic maces are historically regarded as manifestations of the “immortal dignity” of colleges and universities and thus represent the past, present and future.
