Summer Transportation Institute
The purpose of the Summer Transportation Institute (STI) Program is to create awareness and expose high school students to career opportunities in the transportation industry. This program will assist with addressing the need for a diverse workforce in the 21st century by preparing young people to become our future transportation workforce. The STI program is funded by the South Carolina Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration and is administered by Benedict College. The Summer Transportation Institute is a four-week, non-residential program scheduled for June 3-June 27, 2024. Students will report to campus on Mondays through Thursdays (8:30 AM to 5:00 PM) and participate in field trips to SC DOT Construction projects, Boeing, BMW, Clemson University, Charleston International Airport, and Columbia Metropolitan Airport. This opportunity is totally free to the students. There is a required orientation, and closing ceremony that students are parents are required to attend. Also, attendance from 90% of the program is required.
The program will include a minimum of 15 participants ranging from rising 9th to 11th graders who have earned a minimum 2.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale. In addition to completing the application, applicants must submit two letters of recommendation from a teacher, guidance counselor, school official or community leader; a one-page essay, an official transcript, and confirm that they have access to the Internet and a technological device (ie. a desktop computer, laptop, iPad, or smartphone).
The application deadline is May 30, 2024. Selected participants will be notified by May 31, 2024.
