COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) – A new summer camp will start next month that gives kids a hands-on experience about the process of becoming a lawyer.
This summer, Benedict Collegeās Pre-Law Center will partner with the Transforming Generations Outreach Center for the Lawyers in Training or āL.I.Tā summer program at their outreach center on Two Notch Road.
The program has space for up to 60 middle and high school aged campers ā ideally living in the 29204 zip code ā to be immersed in career and character development programs, while learning about different career opportunities in the law field.
Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott, and Columbia Police Deputy Chief Melron Kelly expressed support of the program and are hopeful that educating kids about the law early will give them a better perspective on the importance of following them.
āBusy kids just donāt get in trouble,ā said Benedict College law professor, Ebony Green. āWe chose law because we want to reduce recidivism. In our research weāve found that those that are involved in positive programming.ā
āPeople want to say certain zip codes are bad. Theyāre not. Theyāre just more challenged than others because they donāt get the resources. Now they have a resource here,ā said Lott.
