Melvin Miller is the first Benedict College Faculty Athletic Representative to represent the 15 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) schools as a FAR Fellow
COLUMBIA, SC – September 8, 2025, Melvin Miller has been selected as a 2025 NCAA Division II Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) Fellow. Miller is the first Benedict College FAR to be selected to represent the 15 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) schools as a FAR Fellow.
Miller, an associate professor in the Tyrone Adam Burroughs School of Business and Entrepreneurship, serves as the faculty athletics representative for Benedict College. The faculty athletics representative is a liaison to communicate the benefits of intercollegiate athletics to faculty, the media and external stakeholders, who are accustomed to hearing from athletic administrators and coaches.
Miller says, “This is an opportunity to further enhance the FAR position at our college and learn from other FAR representatives throughout the nation. Even though I was selected as a representative for the SIAC conference, I will be meeting with Division II FARs from across the country. This gives me an opportunity to learn from them and bring back information that will be beneficial both to our students as well as faculty. It also gives me ability to advocate for our student-athletes success academically and athletically.”
Benedict College Athletic Director Coach Willie Washington says Miller’s work is evident in the 3.0 GPA that Athletics now boasts. “We have had very few FARs over the years. Miller shows a concern for the student athletes and is always willing to share with them.”
Miller will attend a FAR Fellows Institute at the end of the month with other Division II conference FARs and present to all SIAC schools during the end of the year meeting.
