Introduction

The Benedict College Black History and Culture Commemoration Committee, the Department of English, Foreign Languages, and Mass Communication, the Sigma Nu Chapter of the Sigma Tau Delta International English Honor Society, and the International English Society present the “Dr. Ruby W. Watts Creative-Writing and Spoken-Word Performance Competition,” In Honor of Dr. Ruby W. Watts, and in observance of African-American History Month, the Department of English, Foreign Languages, and Mass Communication announces this prestigious Competition, which celebrates the African-American History Commemoration Celebration at Benedict College. Dr. Ruby W. Watts provided 55 years of service to Benedict College as Department Chair, Division Chair, Dean, Vice President for Academic Affairs, Interim President (twice), and Executive Vice President. The Competition is open to all students.

Various forms of literary expressions depict themes on African-American resistance and the struggles of African-American labor in the South and throughout America. The Competition is a literary-expression platform allowing student writers and performers to engage in the analysis and critique of “African-American Resistance in Black Writings and Performances” and on “African Americans and Labor.” Two major inquiries are relevant: 1) How have African American writers, artists, and/or performers used literature, drama, music, and/or other forms of expression as tools of resistance, and 2) How do African-American resistance as a form of expression by Black writers, artists, and/or performers resist oppression and respond to labor issues and economic struggles for African-American workers?
