COLUMBIA, SC – September 16, 2025 – Benedict College Senior Maleah Screen has been selected as a 2025-26 Campus Compact Newman Civic Fellow. Screen is a political science major with a minor in pre-law. The Newman Civic Fellowship is a year-long program that recognizes and supports community-committed students who have demonstrated an investment in finding solutions for some of society’s toughest challenges. The fellowship is named in honor of Frank Newman, one of Campus Compact’s founders.
“I am deeply honored to be selected as a Newman Civic Fellow, a recognition that not only celebrates my commitment to civic engagement but also reflects the support, wisdom, and resilience of the communities that have shaped me. I embrace this opportunity with gratitude and intention, not as a personal accolade, but as a call to continue uplifting marginalized voices, challenging systems of inequity, and fostering spaces where compassion and justice are the foundation for progress. Leadership is not about perfection; it’s about purpose, persistence, and people,” says Screen.
Screen who has been extremely active on campus. She has been a member of the Royal Court as Miss Junior. She has hosted a Breast Cancer Awareness Walk, a Mock Mardi Gras, and is planning an event for Mental Health Awareness Month. She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., the Pre-Law Club, the NAACP, the National Council of Negro Women and the Collegiate 100.
This summer, Screen participated in the Lex Fellowship, a legal internship. As a Newman Civic Fellow, Screen will attend a conference in October in Chicago with students from campuses across the country.
After graduation from Benedict, Screen plans to attend Thurgood Marshall School of Law in Houston or Howard University School of Law in Washington, D.C.
