Five Criminal Justice classes joined forces to complete their service-learning project this spring. Dr. Deborah Hunter-Clark, Criminal Justice professor, Monica Hampton, adjunct Criminal Justice instructor, and the students in Criminal Justice, Victimology, Women in Criminal Justice, Correction, Intro to Criminal Justice and Pardon, Probation and Parole courses donated healthy snacks to fill backpacks at Watkins-Nance Elementary School.
Clark says, “This project is a component of the instruction on food insecurities. We learn not only how food insecurity happens but how it impacts families and students. It is important for Criminal Justice professionals to understand the challenges they will encounter as they work with the public in all aspects of their careers.”
“The Watkins-Nance collaboration has existed since 2024, and our students are always excited about this opportunity. This project is specific to student engagement while our fall Stuff-A-Bus effort is inclusive of the entire Benedict College community, “says Criminal Justice Administration Department Chair Lisa Taylor.
The students donated breakfast and snack items beginning in March. On Monday, April 20, students combined the donations into bags. Those bags were delivered by Hunter-Clark and Taylor to Watkins-Nance on Tuesday, April 21.
