BC R.O.A.R. awarded grant from Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities

COLUMBIA, SC – April 16, 2026- The Benedict College Resist Overcome Achieve Rise (BC R.O.A.R.) program has been awarded $120,000 by the Office of Substance Use Services at the South Carolina Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities.

BC R.O.A.R. hosts monthly activities to empower students to resist harmful behaviors and overcome personal challenges to achieve academic and life success and become leaders within their communities. Students can take advantage of services by attending monthly activities sponsored by the Recovery Ambassadors, which generally address overall wellness.  Students can also visit the Wellness Room at the Tiger’s Den, where the Program Coordinator (Adrien) is housed, and work with her individually if additional recovery support services are needed.

Assistant Professor of Social Work and Project Director of BC R.O.A.R. Dr. Kennard DuBose says, “BC R.O.A.R. continues to align with the college’s Strategic Plan ‘Success of Our Students’ and is committed to assisting the college in providing safe spaces for our students who are struggling with life choices leading to substance misuse issues that may disrupt their academic success.”

This is third year BC R.O.A.R. has been awarded the grant. The grant will be used to fund a full-time project coordinator, training opportunities, minimum travel and stipends for the Recovery Ambassadors.
