Philip McNeil, a proud 2003 graduate of Benedict College with a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communications, is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of 1BrightStar Media, a digital media and technology firm specializing in website development, strategic communications, and dynamic content systems for educational institutions, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations.
A native of Columbia, South Carolina, Philip is the eldest son of a vocational rehabilitation specialist and a pharmacy technician, whose commitment to service and care for others helped shape his passion for community engagement and advocacy.
While at Benedict College, Philip developed a strong foundation in publication layout and design, photography, website development, and radio broadcasting. These skills would later become instrumental in launching his entrepreneurial career. What began as a passion for storytelling and digital media evolved into a thriving business that now supports colleges, universities, healthcare institutions, and public sector organizations across the country.
Since founding 1BrightStar Media in 1999, Philip has led the company in delivering innovative web solutions for clients including federal and state agencies such as the United States House of Representatives, the State of North Carolina, and the Southeast Crescent Regional Commission, as well as higher education institutions including Benedict College, South Carolina State University, Oakwood University, Denmark Technical College, Voorhees University, Talladega College, and Winston Salem State University.
Beyond his work in digital media, Philip currently serves as Chair of the Duke Raleigh Hospital Board’s Patient and Family Advisory Council (PFAC), where he has held the role for the past two years following five years of service as a council member. In 2020, he founded The McNeil Foundation in honor of his late wife, with a mission to support and uplift the next generation of healthcare professionals. Since its inception, the Foundation has raised nearly $30,000 in scholarship funds awarded to nursing students pursuing careers in patient care.
He has also served in regional civic leadership roles supporting community outreach and public engagement initiatives across the Commonwealth of Virginia, as a member of his son’s PTA committee supporting educational programs and family engagement within his local school community, and as a member of the Cary Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), a Citizens Corps program dedicated to disaster preparedness and emergency response support.
Philip’s work today focuses on developing scalable digital platforms such as dynamic academic catalogs and integrated communication systems that improve access to information and streamline institutional operations. In addition to his work in the United States, he has expanded his impact internationally through McNeil Technology Group Ltd in Nairobi, Kenya, where he supports digital infrastructure initiatives for NGOs and healthcare providers.
He is also the co founder of Malkia Centre, a Kenya based nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering orphans and teenage mothers through education, mentorship, and life skills development programs.
A devoted father, entrepreneur, and advocate for service, Philip is passionate about using technology and communication as tools for empowerment, especially in underserved communities. He remains committed to mentoring the next generation of media professionals and believes that the principles of leadership, service, and excellence instilled during his time at Benedict College continue to guide his personal and professional journey.
